The Saskatchewan Field Hockey Association is committed to producing the best possible umpires. This page is designed to facilitate the advancement of all current umpires and to provide a guide to all those who want to become umpires.
The first step to becoming a certified umpire is to attend and complete a Provincial Umpiring Course. You will find a list of upcoming courses here at Field Hockey Saskatchewan. Once you have completed the umpiring course you will need to obtain a 'field rating'. This can be done by contacting the SFHA office and arranging for a certified umpire to come and watch you umpire. Once you have been given a field rating you are a certified umpire.
Community Umpiring Clinic
As part of the new FHC umpiring structure implemented this May, Saskatchewan was delighted to be running the first pilot Community Umpiring Clinic held in Regina on April 14 and 15. Course conductor Wendy Stewart was extremely pleased and impressed with our 13 enthusiastic budding male and female umpires participation in the clinic.
The successful participants were Sask athletes from a cross section of our programs. They had a good knowledge of the rules and interpretations which helped their understanding of the game. However, they had very little umpiring experience and the 2 hour practical component of the clinic included some video analysis and feedback. Role playing scenarios also proved invaluable. Their confidence grew during the session which will undoubtedly help them umpire the Regina Elementary School league.
Wendy Stewart said "It's exciting to be part of this umpiring development and I hope it will be a great motivator to get the young Sask umpires involved in further umpiring opportunities across Canada".
All participants from the course are now eligible to umpire at the Prairie Youth Project this summer in Winnipeg to achieve their field assessment and then become a fully certified Community Umpire. Congratulations to all who attended. We wish them well for the future.
