Outdoor Prairie Youth Games (PYG) - Boys and Girls born 1997-2000
The Outdoor PYG is a program for athletes born 1997-2000 (born 1996 can apply for overage status) looking for an introduction to competitive field hockey. Boys and girls teams compete against similar programs in Alberta and Manitoba through exhibition games and tournaments throughout the spring and early summer. Events planned for the 2011 season include a skill development camp April 16-17 at the University of Regina Rams Field, a camp/exhibition series in Brandon May 28, a camp/exhibition series in Regina June 4-5, and the PYG tournament July 8-10, 2011 at the University of Regina Rams Field.
The PYG is a "no cut" program, with boys and girls teams practicing and conditioning about twice a week starting May 15. The program follows the Learn to Train stage of the Long Term Athlete Development model of physical literacy, focusing on participation, flexibility, speed, endurance, and team building.
The cost to join one of the PYG teams is $75. Program participants must also pay the annual SFHA membership fee of $40 once between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012. Participants will also have to pay travel and turf fees for the trip out of town in Brandon in May, and a small levy for a camp/exhibition series in Regina June 4-5. Each player is responsible for their own stick, mouthguard, shin pads, and socks, and can be purchased from the SFHA. Check out our equipment section.
To register, email, fax, or mail in a membership form or contact us for more info, deadline to register is May 29, 2011.

Youth League - Co-ed program for athletes born 1996-2003
The Regina Youth League is an introduciton to field hockey, and is a great complementary program for Elementary School League (ESL) athletes, as well as those athletes wanting to play in the PYG program. The league allows young athletes an opportunity to learn field hockey in a semi-competitive atmosphere, and involves co-ed athletes being split into seperate teams in two different age divisions (born 1996-1999 and 2000-2003). Each practice will include skill development as well as a formal scrimmage. Athletes can borrow a stick if necessary, but must provide their own mouthguards and shin pads, which can be purchased from the SFHA. Check out our equipment section. We will also run a spring session in Yorkton and in Saskatoon, details to come shortly.
